Movie Budget

Unlike some of the big-budget Hollywood movies released recently, Oppenheimer was made with a relatively smaller budget. Reports suggest that it cost $100 million to make the film, not including marketing and publicity costs. This may have prevented it from getting caught in a trap of overwhelming breakeven figures. It is believed that the movie must earn approximately $400 million worldwide to be a success. However, given the amount of pre-release interest and the good word-of-mouth so far, this should be easily achievable.

Oppenheimer Plot

The plot of Oppenheimer draws on American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, a biography released in 2005 that chronicles the scientist’s work that earned him the moniker “father of the atom bomb”. As this book goes beyond only covering his involvement with the Manhattan Project, it’s likely the movie will explore more deeply into Oppenheimer’s life prior to this period and how he transitioned into being a theoretical physicist. Evidence from glimpses of initial footage suggests that it indeed will do so, with signs like a countdown timer hinting at the atomic bomb’s detonation.

Oppenheimer Reviews

Film critic Bilge Ebiri described Christopher Nolan’s new movie OPPENHEIMER as « incredible » and « fearsome ». He lauded it as a « relentlessly paced, insanely detailed, intricate historical drama that builds and builds until Nolan brings the hammer down in a most astonishing and shattering way ».

Jonathan Dean praised it as an audacious, inventive and complex film saying that Murphy was good but the support essential, with Damon, Downey Jr. and Ehrenreich even bring gags.

Gregory Ellwood called it Robert Downey Jr.’s moment and questioned if it was Nolan’s best film till date.

Matt Maytum from Total Film called Oppenheimer a ‘character study on the grandest scale’ saying that it had a sublime central performance by Cillian Murphy, with its tension, structure, sense of scale, startling sound design and remarkable visuals adding to the wow factor.

We still await confirmation of the Oppenheimer OTT streaming release date, but speculations suggest it will come in October 2023. As the movie is produced by Universal Pictures, it may enjoy a 45-day exclusive stay in theaters, running until September that year. Subsequently, fans could then enjoy a digital HD (VOD) release prior to its availability for streaming.
